West Africa: Two Lifestyles (clip)
West Africa: Two Lifestyles (clip)
The lifestyles - occupations, recreational activities, and family life - of two Africans are compared and contrasted by following their daily activities. Pierre Amon is a yam farmer who depends upon the land to get what he and his family need to live. The climate in his village is hot and humid, and his work is hard. If he grows more yams than his family needs, his wife sells them at the market; with the money, she then buys other goods. Life in his village is relatively uncomplicated. Fatime Sylla is a successful and wealthy businesswoman in a modern African city. Although her day is busy, she has maids at home to care for the house and children, and she can afford to buy expensive goods. Her leisure activities include eating at a luxurious restaurant, swimming, and water skiing. She is preparing to leave for a three-week business trip to France. Although there are striking contrasts between Fatime's and Pierre's lives, they both have many similar cares and ideals. They both have a deep concern for their home and family, and most important, they share a strong feeling of pride in being African. Grade Levels: 7 to Adult 18 minutes, color. Does Physical Activity Lead to Higher Grades?
Does Physical Activity Lead to Higher Grades?
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Recently we told you about a finding that more years of school could help students get higher scores on intelligence tests. That was the finding of a study of teenage males in Norway. Now, other research shows that physical activity may help students do better in their classes. The research comes as educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like physical education. They are using the time instead for academic subjects like math and reading. Researchers at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam reviewed the results of fourteen studies. Twelve were from the United States, one from Canada and one from South Africa. The studies appeared between nineteen ninety-seven and two thousand nine. They included more than fifty-five thousand children, ages six to eighteen. Researcher Amika Singh says the studies showed a link between physical activity and scores on subjects such as math, English and reading. "Based on the results of our study we can conclude that being physically active is beneficial for academic performance." Ms. Singh offers some possible explanations. "There are, first, physiological explanations, like more blood flow, and so more oxygen to the brain. Being physically active means there are more hormones produced like endorphins. And endorphins make your stress level lower and your mood improved, which means you also perform better." Also, students involved in ...

Taffy Adler wants to make Johannesburg a better place to live. As head of an unusual building society, he offers thousands of people safe homes in the middle of a city that has had a high level of criminal activity since apartheid ended. Because of this problem, businesses and residents who can afford to, have left the city centre and moved to the suburbs, while downtown Johannesburg has continued to decay. Even the police seem almost to have abandoned the district. Taffy Adler has not. His Johannesburg Housing Company now controls 24 buildings with a total of around 8500 tenants. The housing complexes offer socially deprived families affordable and safe homes, where staff even see to their welfare needs.
